Internal Medicine
From AllCareAnimal
Internal medicine is a branch of specialty medicine involving the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases, especially those involving the internal organs. These specialists are often called upon to act as consultants to other veterinarians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems. As such they're sometimes referred to as the "doctor's doctor."
Internal Medicine specialists diagnose and treat the many serious diseases that can affect the health of a pet's internal body system, including:
- Endocrinology
- Gastroenterology
- Hematology
- Immunology
- Infectious diseases
- Nephrology/Urology
- Respiratory diseases

[edit] Caring For The Whole Patient
Board certified internal medicine specialists are trained to treat the most serious diseases and health problems that affect pets. Despite what their name implies, they don't just treat "internal" problems. These doctors are trained to treat the whole patient. Thanks to better health care, more and more pets are living longer lives. As a result, an increasing number of older pets, just like older people, are coping with multiple disease states that can be very difficult to manage. Internal medicine specialists are uniquely prepared to oversee the care of these complicated cases.
[edit] What is endocrinology?
It is the study of disorders of the endocrine system - a control system of glands that secrete hormones into the bloodstream that act as messengers to affect and regulate the function of organs. A disorder affecting one gland can affect many organs, resulting in several different illnesses. Specialized knowledge and experience are often necessary to recognize the subtle interactions and imbalance involving endocrine hormones. Examples of common endocrine disease in cats are hyperthyroidism and diabetes. In dogs, we see Cushing's, hypothyroidism, and diabetes.
[edit] What is hematology?
It is the study of blood and the blood-forming organs, and it involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting them. Types of blood diseases include various anemias, leukemias, and bleeding or coagulation disorders. Treating these diseases can sometimes require additional experience and training or the resources of a specialty hospital.
